storm chasers

some girlfriends and i planned the most delightful evening last night…  meet at the annie griffin collection warehouse sale, then take it down to the westside to hit up the grand opening of the kayce hughes store, and have a fun dinner afterwards at one of the spots close by.

it started out pretty well at the annie griffin sale at their office in peachtree hills – i am IN LOVE with nearly everything that they have designed.  so many fun patterns!  great details and lines!  fab colors!  it’s as if someone in my head had a clothing line.  i’m only sad i haven’t known of it before now!

annie griffin warehouse salei picked up this dress, and can’t wait to wear it – i love items that can easily be dressed up or down (and BONUS are sans waistband – i like my meals).

IMG_7030_grandewe all adored this dress. however, after betsey (she of tall and slender build) tried it on, we were like….oh.  that’s how it’s supposed to look.  still love it though.

soon it was time to mosey on to kayce hughes.  i was a little miffed because in a brief moment with no kids in the car where i could blast my music, i could barely get any actual tunes on the radio.  tornado warnings, severe weather watches and those super long beeps was all there was.  i listened for the areas affected and they were all north of where we were.  good to go!

the kayce hughes store is to die…divine things for little ones and big, too.

600308_10151551638288075_509185925_nthe storm rolled in while we were there and it was most definitely angry.  rinne had to have the most adorable pair of ric-rac trimmed pique shorts, and right after i purchased them, the power went out.  but that did not deter us!  we simply refilled our wine glasses and got right back to shopping.

photo-190 copy 2i wish i had a picture of amy making her purchase, giving the sales associate her c.c. number by candlelight.

and what a bummer – since the power was out in the entire complex, no dinner!!!  we walked out to the parking deck and saw several fire rescue people running about…  and took a picture to capture the torrential downpour going on behind us (even though you can’t see it).

photo-190 copy#welikewhitejeans

as we walked further into the parking garage, we saw the reason for the commotion…people were stuck in the elevator!!!!

photo-190hopefully spidey and the other guys got them loose.  #yikes

rain check on that dinner, ladies.

milly + BR

confession:  i don’t have any conventional credit cards.  the concept of “free money” is way too tempting for me and i’ve operated on a cash only basis for years.  i think it keeps me in check because if i can’t pay for it in full when i buy it, i really shouldn’t be buying it in the first place.  HOWEVER.  i have had a banana republic credit card since college, and racked up so much $$$ on it in the early 2000s that they would send me periodic gifts and branded me a special “luxe” customer because i passed a certain dollar amount every year.  oops.  y’all, i used to LOVE ME some banana republic.  now their apparel seems so work-y, i kind of broke up with them but i still rely on BR for great jewelry and the occasional sale rack find.  oh, and i have the credit card still to buy staples for the kids at babygap and every so often, a nice pair of shoes or a dress at piperlime.  so i am still earning my luxe status, lucky them.

but now – the love affair is back on.  they have a line with milly that hits stores may 30th!  me and milly – we’re tight.  we’re like that motion where you have two fingers and point to your eyes and then someone else’s.  i get them, they get me.  i love their colors, their styles, their patterns, and everything i order in my size is like it was made for me.

MillyBR

and don’t EVEN get me started on their milly minis line….i die.

mother_daughter_102_288705k

i just realized they have THIS!  rinne clearly must own it.

Screen Shot 2013-05-16 at 1.22.34 PM

they have the BEST long maxi dresses.  here is one from the BR/milly line – apparently if you’re famous you get an early release…

PicMonkey-Collage-424x358

apparently they are making men’s clothes in the milly/BR line as well!  maybe rbb and i can match some days instead of me and rinne :)  (just kidding – he would sooner go nude.)

ode to lilly

thank heavens for lilly pulitzer. a lover of color, bright and bold patterns, and perhaps most importantly – a good soiree.  i was so sad to hear of her passing yesterday…her story just fascinates me, how she stumbled upon this eventual iconic empire by making a simple dress out of fabric so lively that that juice stains wouldn’t show.  (btw, this vanity fair article is a great read if you’re curious to know more about her.)

i love this photo of her with her daughters.  and y’all know how i feel about mother-daughter matching ensembles.

Lilly-Pulitzer-poses-with-her-daughters-Minnie

one of the very first birth announcements i designed featured a lilly pulitzer envelope liner – her elephants print.  i still get requests for it, even though the elephant paper has been sadly discontinued!

elephants birth announcement

and this baby shower invitation with her pink hydrangea print (also discontinued, dagnabit!) – i believe the blog post featuring it goes down as one of my top three most read.  it seems A LOT of people are googling “pink and green baby shower invitations.”

baby shower 4some more recent work utilizing her regatta  and begonia prints.

new lilly workand what is one to do when one is sad at the loss of a legend of our time?

there’s nothing else to do, but don a lilly frock and try to have a good time.

photo-185 copy“that’s what life is all about.  let’s have a party.  let’s have it tonight.”

cheers to you, lilly!

shopping on st. simons

if any of you ever make it down to st. simons, you simply must know that there is a tibi outlet there.  how random, you say?!  well, the founder of tibi, amy smilovic (who happened to be in my same sorority at the u. of georgia so we clearly would be total, inseparable bffs if we ever met), hails from st. simons and her parents still live there.  so it’s not too random, and i could not be happier that this place exists.  (specifically, it’s in redfern village – a big collection of cute, local shops.)

once i got closer to the door, all my dreams came true.

these were mainly dresses priced at either $75 or $125, so i grabbed about 12 to try on and headed inside.  i went mainly for the $75 items because honestly – i can get a tibi dress for $125 on sale at bloomie’s and it ain’t a sample.  know what i mean?

…but when i stepped inside i saw THIS!

can you see those prices???  bathing suit tops (which do not apply to me as i have retired all bikinis, forever) for $10, bathing suit bottoms for $5 and one piece suits for $19.  fab!  i couldn’t leave without one one piece suit and two bathing suit bottoms – one for me, and one for brin.  i figure we can find cute solid color tankini tops (btw – can we get a new word for this item – it sounds SO maw maw) at j.crew and bam, done.

they also had stellar deals on fun party dresses (these were not samples – just overruns, i guess).

i loved this one.  how fun is that bib slash built in necklace?

alas, i did not find any winners in my pile of dressing room items.  but i am still on cloud nine from my bathing suit deals!

i also visited the bailey boys outlet – they have darling children’s clothes.  but y’all, i have high, or is it low, standards for outlet shopping.  items must be things i would buy anyway, in good condition (i.e. not too irregular and no missing buttons – lord knows it will never find its way on there again in my care) and at GREAT deals, we’re talking like 70% or 80% off.  they had darling things, but only at maybe 20% or 30% discounts.  i don’t brake for that.

but my mom and i also went shopping (kind of) in the real estate market.  not that we’re buying a house down there or anything, but isn’t it fun to think about which ones you would buy?

i found mine.  actually, i might be in a bidding war with my mom – we both ogled it long enough i’m surprised the owners didn’t come out to chase us away.

of course it has an original brick fireplace.

did i mention it’s a mere block from the beach?  and did you see that tree??
if that one happens to be unavailable, i suppose i could settle on one of these other ones.
i am such a sucker for storm shutters (there has to be a cuter name for those?).
tabby + upstairs porch + aqua door = yes please.
a red door is so perfect for a beach house.
i know rbb is glad i only spent $30 at the tibi outlet and didn’t get us in the hole for a beach house mortgage.  but here’s hoping, one day!

oscar night

how fun is oscar night?  i always love it.  this year i exhibited some calliespondence wares at my friend amy’s house during her oscar party.  she is quite the splendid hostess and tied in the food items with movie themes!!  love it.  check out a few of them…

here we have some moneyballs. (er, spinach balls.)

taqueria del sol’s memphis bbq with jalapeno coleslaw on hawaiian rolls. (aloha theme courtesy of the descendants)

and some chocolate pies with no special ingredient a la minnie in the help.

and to sip on, silver screen punch…which might have you seeing silver, or another solid color, by the end of the night.  vodka and champagne together – DANGER but soooo good.

what fun – thanks for having me amy!!

so, of course it’s just the best to see the stars all gussied up and the show was actually pretty entertaining…but i’m an easy laugh.  i thought billy crystal was great!  and i almost cried when my dvr stopped in the middle of meryl’s speech.  dadgumit!  she is just so lovely, although i was pulling for viola.

now…i’m no angelina fan…damn homewrecker…but seriously, what in the WORLD was she doing with her leg all night.  yeah, we know you have long, skinny legs and you’re just oh-so-daring with your big slit.   hold the sass.

emma stone is unstoppable. i loved the cut of this dress and props to her for pulling off a red dress so well.  and could her presenting have been any more darling?

while a little underwhelming on the bling factor (can she not call in a favor to neil lane and get a vintage diamond necklace on loan like everybody else?), i did love this dress coupled with her tousled hair highlighted so perfectly.

speaking of bling…i just think this dress would be the most fun to wear.  who doesn’t love a good paillette fest?  love the drama of the bangs too.

those were the ones i loved – well, and laughed at, angie – along with viola davis (that green!!) and cameron diaz (fit her like a glove).  worst dressed in my eyes were rooney mara (ick.  white lace with weird three dimensional boob saucers), jessica chastain (this girl is drop dead gorgeous – why can she not find a decent stylist!!!!), j.lo (those cutouts – this is the oscars, not in living color lady.), sandra bullock (sooo ill-fitting) and penelope cruz (i think i wore a bridesmaid dress just like that in the 90s).
now i’m off to score a nap…that was a late night!!

dvf for babygap

OH – EM – GEE.  those were the sounds resonating in my head when i saw my friend michelle’s facebook post about DVF (that’s diane von furstenberg for the rock-dwellers) designing a line of clothes for babygap.  i surely just died and went to heaven…rinne and i can have matching wrap dresses!  ha ha.  when you were little, didn’t you LOVE to wear matchy-matchy clothes with your mom??  oh i did.  laura ashley and allen allen (remember them!!??) made some mother/daughter sets and cathy and i wore them proudly.  well, at least i did.  now that i’m in the mom seat, not so sure how keen i would be on it but maybe things were different back then?!

here’s a preview of the line…i think i’m just going to set up a direct deposit from my bank account into babygap’s cash register.

i believe it hits stores march 15th.  you better believe i’m going to wake up early that morning to hit the website!  it’s kind of embarrassing, but i’ve been a banana republic “luxe” card member since…i think college.  that’s what they do for poor girls in their early 20s when they spend a lot of money they don’t have on clothes they don’t really need.  as a result, i haven’t paid for shipping from any of the gap brands maybe ever?  it used to be handy to transport flirty tops to go out in (i recall my 21st birthday party shirt was from BR…i think they used to be more edgy, ok…) and now i love to capitalize on it to get toddler underpants and newborn onesies delivered to my door gratis.  how times have changed.
anyway, it’s only fitting that i go one for one with rinne’s dvf…yes?  here’s what i’m thinking my closet could use…
this wrap dress.  i only have one and it just can’t be beat.  feels great on, doesn’t wrinkle and i can get dressed in five seconds flat.  and this blue and white timeless pattern = yes please!
i LOVE a lace dress.

she really just has the best patterns.

i believe this shirt’s pattern could hide spit-up stains, which is a requirement for all that i don.

a little off topic – but as i sat at the computer stunned yesterday morning reading all about whitney houston’s untimely death, i watched her sing the national anthem over and over while holding rinne.  now, when i was about 8, i had this VHS tape with four of her videos…the greatest love of all, i wanna dance with somebody and a couple more.  i was OBSESSED with it, to put it mildly.  memorized every word, every dance move…i tell you i wore that video tape out.  i got to thinking – who would rinne do that with?  who would rinne want to dress like, sing like, be like?  we can only guess, but i can remember being that 8 year old girl so well, rapt with whitney’s talent and beauty.  i suppose it’s simply a part of growing up…coming to find out the people who were so indomitable and illustrious when you’re a kid are just real people with real problems like addiction.  her death made me feel old, because isn’t my generation still too young to lose one of its early idols?  i guess not.

but i think i’ll always remember her wearing day-glo dresses and fantastic huge 80s earrings in the coolest confetti scene i would have killed to re-enact.

and if it so happens that rinne’s idol wears dvf wrap dresses and fun, vibrant printed clothes…we’ll be covered.

welcome, new friends

there is nothing i love more than a sale that’s on sale.  and darnit, i get SO many emails in my inbox in january telling me about these sales on sale and i just can’t resist all of them.  i fell prey to loeffler randall’s email last week offering an extra 20% off sale items.  i’m still mourning the loss of my one pair of LRs, as exhibited here…and still haven’t found a cobbler to help me!  anyway, i have needed some new black flats for a while.  the pair i wear i have had forevah and a girl needs an update every now and again.  so look what arrived on my doorstep yesterday…

um…maybe the prettiest shoebox i have ever seen.  but with my receipt tucked into a letterpressed envelope?!  be still my heart.

love shoes that come with their own shoe bag.

and of course i just adore the shoes.  and need to clean my floors.

life is so exciting with new kicks on, no?  i am still trying to find a way to smuggle these into my closet…i mean, HOW fab.

260 fifth ave

do you know what is going on right now?

the DVF sample sale.  items are 75% off, people.  oh how i would love to be at 260 fifth ave, new york, new york right now!  i’m sure those racks are full of wrap dresses that would love to find a nice home in my closet.

how much do you love the coat check for the sale.  i mean really?

but even though i would LOVE to be combing the racks in nyc right now, i don’t like anything as much as hanging out with these two.

well, these two and baby jesus (in rush’s hands).  can’t forget him.
xoxo

don’t be fooled

programming note: please do not proceed in this post any further if you are an anti-fur activist because you won’t like it and it’s monday morning and let’s just agree to disagree and save a lot of time.  mmkay thanks.

one reason why i am so glad it’s winter is that i can wear my fur coat.  i’m here to say – fur coats are like bulletproof vests for cold.  love that.

this just isn’t any fur coat.  it wasn’t my grandmother’s, i didn’t get it at an estate auction or from a fine ladies’ boutique but it is vintage.  you know those crazy looking thrift stores (i really think this one was literally called thrifty’s or something) that you pass in outer boroughs from where you live but never bother to stop or are scared to?  sometimes i stop at them.  you just never know what you’ll find.

when rush was almost 1, we had to get him a new car seat.  we bought him a brand new one for my car (that he rides in 90% of the time), but also wanted one for rbb’s car so we wouldn’t have to constantly shuffle it between the cars (btw if you are in question of doing this…so worth it!  just bite the bullet and get two.  time is money people.).   we knew we weren’t going to use the other one nearly as much so i took to my buddy craig and his list and found an identical car seat that was barely used…sweet.  only problem was that it was WAY far out of town and i had to trek out there to get it.  i spotted the thrift store on my way to pick up the car seat, grabbed it, gave the people a check and high-tailed it back to this mecca. it was SO run down and random looking i just knew it had to hold immense treasure.

do you see the slit for the pocket?  those are clutch.

so as i go in there i’m contemplating what to check out first…and end up hitting the furniture section. it backed up to the women’s coats and my eye caught the rack.  there she was – a real fur?!  surely not.  check the tag, says “natural genuine rabbit fur.”  overkill with the “i’m real!” adjectives?  hmm.  feels real.  looks real.  my size.  look at the price tag and about choke – $10?!  this cannot be for real.  oh – but it is…and the tag was red or blue or something and that meant it was on sale.  30% off, so i picked her up for $7.  and then promptly spent 6 times what i paid for her to get her cleaned…

so glad i found this when i was photographing the coat!  always wondered where it was. bottom left seam…that’s a new one.

i used to feel weird wearing it out, like it was too “fancy” or i looked overdressed or something.  but now that i barely leave the house and it cost the same amount as a sandwich, i’m thinking about throwing it on over my yoga pants to wear on grocery store runs.  yes?

xoxo

that darn gywnnie

i bet it’s tough for gwyneth paltrow to be this talented, this pretty and also able to pull off such a gorgeous dinner party table.  oh, and i suppose she probably cooked the entire meal from scratch too.  what a showoff.

wouldn’t you just DIE to have a place setting at that table though?  i would!
